As Traders, Eyewitnesses Lament Late Response from Fire Fighters
- Safiu Kehinde
A commercial complex at the popular Tejuosho market in Lagos has been gutted by fire with goods worth millions of Naira destroyed.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening with videos shared on X on Thursday showing thick some emerging from the complex.
While the cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained, the incident had thrown traders into panic as they lamented over the wares trapped in the complex as they attempted to evacuate some of the goods from the affected buildings.
Some of the traders and eyewitnesses decried the late response of firefighters during the early stage of the incident.
No firefighter vehicle was spotted in the video despite the proximity of a fire service office to the market area.
According to reports, an eyewitness who spoke on the incident criticised the government’s emergency response system and questioned why there was no permanent and fully equipped fire station within the market vicinity.
“And to think that Fire Service Office is just some few meters away,
“I wonder why we can’t have a permanent fire service station at the market and the Barracks area with helicopters and trained personnel.” The eyewitness said as the fire raged through shops and stalls, with many attempting to salvage goods on their own.
