The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU) Chapter, has embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the school management.
According to the statement, the cause of the strike stemmed from the government’s failure to fulfill their 2025 agreement.
“Recall that ASUU and FG on 23rd December, 2025 signed an agreement for enhanced welfare of Academic staff and for other conditions of service in public universities scheduled to take effect from 1st January, 2026.
”On this, ASUU addressed the media on May 11th, 2026 after Yola NEC. At the Zonal level, approximately six weeks ago, ASUU Owerri Zone addressed the media calling on imo State government to implement the Agreement in IMSU. But unfortunately, nearly eight months down the line nothing has changed in Imo State University,” it read.
The university decried the government’s inability to fufill its promise stating that implementation has commenced in some state-owned universities.
“While implementation has commenced in some state-owned universities including those owned by Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and Sokoto states, it is saddening that such has not happened in IMSU despite repeated engagements with our university administration.”
Reacting to the strike, some of the students disclosed that they barely commenced their exams before they were asked out of the hall by ASUU.
In a video circulating on social media, one of the students criticized the action of ASUU, stating that there was no prior warning before they started their exams.
“They asked us to go home that the strike commenced by 8am today and we should go home till further notice.
“There was no memo, no information, nothing at all before now. We just got to the hall, few minutes into the exam, they came in and asked us out. Telling us ASUU has gone on strike till further notice,” he said.
Another student who was sitting for her final papers said that this was the saddest day of her life as a student.
“This is one of the saddest day of my life as a student. I just got to the hall to write my first paper of my final year exam, and then ASUU just came into the hall and announced an indefinite strike,” she said.
