The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Office of Drainage Service, Mr. Mahmood Adegbite, has raised the alarm that residents who have boreholes in the Ibeju Lekki area are consuming untreated water.
He announced ongoing plans to treat wastewater around Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.
Adegbite stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday.
The Lagos Drainage Service Permanent Secretary explained that Lekki residents with boreholes are consuming what he described as shit water as a result of untreated wastewater seeping into underground water sources.
This, according to him pose serious health risks to residents and may lead to emerge of diseases.
He said all manners of outbreak must be eradicated with the treatment of the wastewater.
“Presently also on wastewater treatment, I will say that anyone digging any borehole in Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call shit water.
“However, if we are able to treat all this wastewater in this axis which we have plans for, we should be able to also make sure that we eradicate any form of disease that may emerge as a result of non-treatment of our wastewater.” He said.
Adegbite also expressed concern over the flash flood currently experienced in the state and its impact on the ongoing Lagos-Calabar coastal highway construction.
“The flooding challenges along the coastal road is one of the major things we are hoping to resolve.
And also yesterday, it rained heavily which is unusual because this is supposed to be August break.
“However, we’ve started having it because of a lot of complex issues.
“So, in terms of flooding, despite the fact that we have committed so much. However, we still need a lot to do in that space.” He said.
