Parts of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital have been submerged under water as a massive flood ravaged the city in the last 8 hours.
NPO Reports learnt that the flood was caused by the breakdown of Alau Dam.
TheAlau Dam is situated in the Alau community of Konduga local government area of Borno State in the Northeast region of Nigeria, constructed in 1984–1986..
A major market in the city has been taken over by flood as homes and other areas are being evacuated.
Governor Babagana Zulum had said he activated a mechanism to prevent the impact of the flood.
Usman Tar, the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, said in a statement titled “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents “, called for immediate evacuation.
Tar said, “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all the residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties.
“The Alau Dam water has broken down another channel that is currently destroying farms and the water is heading toward the river bank.”
