Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi has apologised for the tension that followed remarks he made during a campaign visit to the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III.
In a statement signed by the Senator, his visit to the palace was intended to seek justice and express his pain over the killing of some members of his political party during the Osun State governorship election.
NPO Reports recall that Fadahunsi had in a viral video on social media charged supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilesa and its environs to kill any member of the Accord Party, starting from the moment of his statement till the end of the conduct of the August 15 governorship election.
The senator representing Osun East Senatorial District said his emotional appeal was later interpreted by critics as a call for violence, which he stated was an unfair representation of his position.
He insisted that he did not call for chaos or violence, explaining that his remarks were made at a difficult moment when he was deeply affected by the deaths of party members.
Fadahunsi also commended the Owa of Ijesaland for his handling of the situation, praising the monarch for remaining calm and demonstrating wisdom despite claims that the senator’s remarks were disrespectful to the traditional institution.
According to him, the monarch showed the qualities of a father to all, irrespective of political affiliation, while his balanced response helped prevent the situation from escalating.
Fadahunsi stressed that political leaders must prioritise the interests of the people above personal feelings and political differences.
He said the peace of Osun State, particularly Ijesaland, was more important than any political victory, defeat or disagreement.
“Because the peace of Osun State and Ijesaland in particular is far more important than any political dispute, victory, or defeat, I sincerely apologise for the tension that resulted from this misunderstanding,” he said.
The senator appealed to his supporters and other residents of Osun State to embrace peace and work towards healing following the election.
He also urged residents to respect the role of traditional institutions in promoting peace and unity in Ijesaland.
However, Fadahunsi said his demand for justice over the deaths of his party members remained unchanged.
He called on the Osun State Government and security agencies to properly investigate the killings and ensure that justice is achieved through lawful and peaceful means.
Fadahunsi further urged all political actors to put their differences aside and work towards restoring peace and unity in the state.
