The ancient city of Kano was on Saturday hit with a massive protest by those who called for a rethink over the planned war with Niger over the recent coup.
While saying it will explore diplomatic options, the Authorities of the Heads of States of ECOWAS member countries had on Friday said a standby operation force should be ready ahead of possible deployment in Niger.
But a groundswell of resistance is mounting as many condemn proposed war with the neighboring country.
Soldiers had upstaged President Mohamed Bazoum in a palace coup two weeks ago.
ECOWAS had said it would not condone further attacks on constitutional democracy in West Africa.
Already, the coup came amid other existing ECOWAS members that had already been placed under military commands.
As the protesters moved in different parts of the city, they carried placards with slogans saying “Nigeriens are our brothers, Nigeriens are also our family.”
Niger is ours, we don’t want war, war against Niger is injustice, a plot by the western forces.”
