The Joint Matriculation Examinaton Board (JAMB) has dropped the minimum cut-off mark for admission into Nigerian universities to 150.
This was disclosed in a post shared on the board’s official X handle on Tuesday.
According to the post, the new cut-off mark as approved by JAMB at its onging policy meeting is to be adopted for the next academic session.
The change also reflected on Polytechnic institutions’ cut-off mark which has now been reduced to 100.
Similarly, colleges of education and nursing sciences also saw a drop in their minimum cut-off mark to 100.
“The minimum admissible scores for admissions for the next academic session have been fixed at 150 for universities, 100 for polytechnics, 100 for colleges of education and 140 for colleges of nursing sciences by the stakeholders (Heads of Tertiary Institutions).” the post read.
The development had however sparked mixed reactions from netizens with concerns raised over the current standard of education in the country.
“Setting the university cutoff mark at 150 is a glaring sign that the standard of education in Nigeria is crumbling. It’s a wakeup call for a total overhaul. These days, people like Peller place more value on social media fame than on formal education because it brings in faster money than what many Master’s degree holders earn. The system is clearly broken.”@ToheebAlim
“This is very poor. Very poor.”@DevonAjala
“If the cut off mark will be 150 then why is the highest score 400?? Is 150 and 100 not too small ?? Kids do not need to prepare next year then, when they can easily get 100 or 150. Mtcheew.”@EknoredaVickKy
“By 2030. The jamb cut of mark will be 70″@official_papson
“Isn’t it smarter to just give them 100 for writing their names? If you, the body that should be most concerned that the education standards are falling, is proactively dropping them, then at least be ashamed enough to hide your face.”@Ade Seriki
“This is totally wrong. 150? Our educational system is finally gone.”@Shadowwwalker1
“There should be a state of emergency declared on Nigeria’s educational system.”@sylvsoje01
“The generation that claim to know too much but yet low brain capacity to pass ordinary JAMB. I pour Una spit”@Stevefred227
“Jamb God go punish una 😭 After all the stress you guys put me through when I was looking for admission just because I wasn’t getting the cutoff mark of my desired course of study, you guys are now reducing cutoff marks now that I’ve graduated 😒 Wrote jamb 3 freaking times.”@Just_Wendy_
“The registrar of JAMB is admittedly saying that he’s incapable of maintaining the academic standard of the examining body. This man has done enough to be asked to hands off directorial duties. Why make the cutoff mark 100? Why not make it 50 and 22 for the North?”@UnkleAyo
“Is it possible that students are slowly drifting off education itself or they’re becoming daft internationally. Look at the admissible score at 150 for university, what what will be the standards medical school etc. it’s quite unbecoming.”@KambaiPraise
