Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, has defended the impeachment plot against the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who he labelled a mistake and threat to democracy.
NPO earlier Reported the Assembly’s commencement of Fubara’s impeachment process over alleged misconduct as contained in a letter of allegation submitted to Amaewhule and signed by 26 lawmakers.
While acknowledging the letter, the Speaker stood in defence of the impeachment process as he slammed Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, who was also listed for impeachment.
Amaewhule called out Fubara over the delay in the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
“Siminalayi Fubara is a mistake. Rivers State has never had it this bad.
“In the entire Nigeria, Siminalayi Fubara and Profressor Ngozi Odu, these are the only two people at the sub-national level that are yet to present 2026 Appropriation Bill.
“I’m sure that even at the entire West African sub-region and Africa, you will not find any sub-national government that has not presented an appropriation bill for 2026.
“Who will believe that in this 21st century that a state like Rivers state will not have an appropriation bill presented. Nothing is holding the governor from presenting it.” He said.
The Speaker also accused Fubara of intimidating the Assembly with threat to report them to President Bola Tinubu in what he tagged a threat to national democracy.
“And the Governor has been boasting that he will go and see the President for him to come and give us instruction.
“He has been boasting and saying it to his followers that this Assembly cannot do anything and cannot uphold the constitution.
“This is a sad commentary for our democracy.
“Siminalayi Fubara and Profressor Ngozi Odu are nothing but a threat to our national democracy. If they are allowed to remain in office, I don’t know what will become of our democracy.” He added.
