The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital has been of refusal to admit an allegedly raped 10-year-old girl after being rushed to the hospital.
The visibly weak girl was reportedly found abandoned at Etagbo Layout.
Unable to talk on account of fatigue, she given with bread and soft drink after she regained little energy and revealed being gang-raped by three suspected hoodlums.
The victim, identified as Peace Usua Udom, was subsequently rushed to UCTH, where she was given injection and medication.
However, the hospital allegedly refused to admit her as they demanded Police Extract.
This forced the those who brought her to the hospital to return Peace back to the spot at Etagbo Layout, where she was left sleeping.
When contacted on Saturday, the Cross-River State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Akata, confirmed the incident which according to him occurred on Friday.
Akata however claimed that the case was not officially reported to the police, noting that he came across the post online.
The police spokesperson held that the rescuers would have contacted the police on their arrival at the hospital, stressing that police extract is not necessarily needed in such case.
‘We have not been made aware officially. I think I came across the post earlier this morning and I sent it to the DPO covering that area.
‘The major issue we in this state is that most of them don’t want to necessarily involve police.
‘The right thing would have been to even call as they were even at the hospital or call someone involved in such special case.
‘That is what they need and not necessarily a police extract. It is just to get the authorities involved.’ He said.
Akata further disclosed that the girl had since been retrieved and handed to social welfare
‘I just confirmed that the girl was retrieved yesterday and taken to the social welfare.’ He said.
When asked if the police will be taking action on investigating the alleged rape incident, the spokesperson maintained that the rape case has not been reported to the police.
‘The case of rape wasn’t reported to us by those who brought her to the station.’ He said.
Meanwhile, effort to reach out to the UCTH over the hospital’s alleged rejection of the girl proved abortive
