The 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed the reason behind his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
NPO Reported that Obi formally left the ADC alongside former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Sunday after several speculations.
The duo was received at the NDC’s national secretariat in Abuja by the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson.
Reacting to the development in a statement issued on his X handle on Monday, Obi disclosed that he left the ADC for the same reason he left the Labour Party.
The former Anambra state governor alleged that litigation cases facing the ADC were deliberately orchestrated in a bid to see that he did not participate in the forthcoming 2027 Presidential Election.

“I left the ADC for the same reason I left the Labour Party: the severe, orchestrated litigation and internal crises deliberately designed to ensure that I, alongside many other notable individuals, do not effectively participate in the electoral process.” He said.
While expressing his gratitude to the ADC factional chairman, Sen. David Mark, for his exceptional leadership as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi said that the decision to join the NDC is not a betrayal of its values but a continuation of its long-standing mission to build a better Nigeria.
“I sincerely appreciate and remain deeply grateful to the Leadership of ADC for the opportunity to work together in pursuit of a better Nigeria.
“I am particularly grateful to ADC Chairman Senator David Mark for his exceptional Leadership.

“I also deeply appreciate my Leader and elder brother YE, Atiku Abubakar, as well as other respected leaders within the party.
“Our decision to join the NDC is not an abandonment of values, but a continuation of the same mission we have always stood for: building a Nigeria where leadership is about service, where public resources are managed responsibly, where institutions function independently, and where every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, religion, region, or social status, can live with dignity, security, and hope.” Obi said.
The ex-Anambra governor however the urged Federal Government to desist from encouraging litigations and alleged infusion of crises within opposition parties.
“As we join the NDC, I sincerely appeal to the Nigerian Government against the encouragement of unresolved litigations and the infusion of crises within political parties.

“Democracy must never become a weapon against the people. A healthy democracy thrives on strong institutions, credible alternatives, and the freedom of citizens to make choices without intimidation, manipulation, or fear.
“Opposition parties must not be weakened or destroyed, because when democracy loses balance, the people ultimately suffer.” He said.
Obi reaffirmed that he remains committed to building a better Nigeria for the citizens.
He admonished the people not to lose hope despite the challenges confronting the country.
