The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has charged the Federal Government and employers to create an enabling environment where labour is truly valued and rewarded.
NBA further demanded sustained reforms that prioritize the welfare of workers, strengthen labour institutions, and ensure that justice is accessible to all.
The association gave the charge in a statement issued on Friday by its President, Afam Osigwe.
While commemorating with Nigerians over Workers’ Day celebration, Osigwe described the celebration as a moment to reflect on the critical role that workers play in sustaining our economy, strengthening our institutions.
He noted that several Nigerian workers currently face significant challenges ranging from poor working to limited access to social protection.
“On this International Workers’ Day, the Nigerian Bar Association joins millions of Nigerians and workers across the country in celebrating the dignity of labour, the resilience of the Nigerian worker, and the enduring value of hard work in nation-building.
“Today offers us a moment to reflect on the critical role that workers play in sustaining our economy, strengthening our institutions, and advancing the ideals of justice, equity, and development.
“From the public servant to the artisan, from the teacher to the trader, and indeed to legal practitioners across the country, your daily sacrifices continue to shape the future of our nation.
“This celebration must be accompanied by honest reflection. Many Nigerian workers still face significant challenges, including poor working conditions, delayed or inadequate remuneration, and limited access to social protection.” The NBA President stated.
He thereafter called for renewed commitment from all stakeholders in prioritising the welfare condition of the workforce.
“These realities call for renewed commitment from all stakeholders, government, employers, and institutions, to create an environment where labour is truly valued and rewarded.
“We therefore call for sustained reforms that prioritize the welfare of workers, strengthen labour institutions, and ensure that justice is accessible to all, especially the most vulnerable.” He added.
Osigwe affirmed the NBA’s commitment to advocacy for fair labour practices and access to justice for workers as he hailed their courage and dedication.
“As members of the legal profession, we recognize that the protection of workers’ rights is not merely a policy objective but a constitutional imperative.
“The NBA remains committed to advocating for fair labour practices, access to justice for workers, and the enforcement of laws that uphold dignity, safety, and equity in the workplace.
“As we celebrate today, we salute the courage, dedication, and perseverance of Nigerian workers.
“Your contributions do not go unnoticed, and your impact remains the backbone of our collective progress.” Osigwe added.
