Human Rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has called out the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over disruption in water supply across the capital city.
Yesufu decried the lack of access to steady and clean water in the FCT, disclosing that families and businesses are forced to rely on boreholes, water sellers, and tankers despite Abuja’s position as one of Africa’s largest economies.
The activist made this known in a statement issued on her X handle on Wednesday.
She held that the challenge affects both the upper and lower classes at the capital city.
“This is not how it should be. It shows that the system is not working.
“Recent water disruptions all over the Federal Capital Territory only confirm what many residents already go through every day, water does not come regularly, systems break down, and people are left to find their own solutions.
“This problem affects everyone. It does not matter if you are rich or poor. When even major places in the capital are affected, it is clear that no one is safe from a failing system.” Yesufu said.
The activist harped on the significance of water to health and hygiene, warning that its shortage put many residents at risk of disease.
Yesufu questioned the investment of the FCT’s water system as she called out Wike.
“Water is not just about convenience. It affects our health, our hygiene, and our daily living. When there is no water, people are at risk of disease, and the cost of living becomes even harder for ordinary Nigerians.
“This is not just one incident. It shows a bigger problem. We cannot keep accepting this as normal.
“Where is the investment in our water systems?Who is being held responsible when these systems fail?
“Why are Nigerians still struggling for something so basic? Clean water is not a luxury. It is a right.
“Fix the system. Provide reliable water. Be accountable.
“What is Mr Nyesom Wike doing? Abuja people deserve better.” She added.
