Nigerian human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the decision of fellow activist, Aisha Yesufu, to contest for the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) Senatorial seat under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)
Sowore claimed that Yesufu joined the wrong political party.
Recall that the #BringBackOurGirls convener had last month defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Days after her defection, the activist declared interest in the FCT Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Reacting to the development during an interview on Channels TV’s Morning Brief programme on Monday, Sowore declared his support for Yesufu’s decision and wishes her the best.
“I totally support her. I have always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things should get into politics.
“She used to say that she has no business running for office. She used to condemn those of us who are activists who run for office.
“She doesn’t want to support anybody but her own candidate which she is entitled to. But I’m glad, finally, she has come to that position and realization.
“I used to feel that way too before 2016 or so. That activists don’t have business in politics.
“But you know, the business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society.” He said.
The 2023 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) however faulted Yesufu’s choice of NDC as he claimed the activist should have joined his party instead.
“So, I totally support her and I hope she wins even if I think she’s in the wrong party. She should have joined our party.” He said.
In response to Sowore’s statement on the same programme, Aisha said she is not in the wrong party, stressing that the AAC founder should have marketed the party more so people will join.
“I’m not in the wrong party. Maybe he should market the party more not to be like a one-person party, so we’ll come and join.” She said.
