Former Anambra state governor and 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has alongside Human Rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, spearheaded another protest at the National Assembly over the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
In continuation of their call for the reinstatement of the provision mandating electronic transmission of election results, protesters comprising of the Obidient Movement and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Youth Wing, had again assembled at the NASS complex on Monday with Obi leading the charge alongside Yesufu.
Videos shared on X showed the former Anambra governor marching alongside the demonstrators who were also joined by several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the OccupyNationalAssembly protest.
According to reports, the protest follows the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Reenactment) Amendment Bill 2026 through the third reading, in which the lawmakers removed the phrase “real-time” transmission of election results.
The Senate had, in the wake of backlash and public outrage over the decision, issued several clarifications regarding reports that it rejected electronic transmission of results.
However, the protesters insist that lawmakers must explicitly include “real-time electronic transmission” in the proposed legislation.
Addressing newsmen, Obi reiterated the call for the reinstatement of the electronic transmission of results which was rejected by the Senate during the passage of the bill last week.
Obi harped on the need for transparency in forthcoming elections.
“What we want is an electoral process that is transparent.
“What we want is an electoral process that is transparent. Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whoever wins, we will accept. Why are you bringing confusion? Obi asked.
Meanwhile, the Senate is set to converge for an emergency meeting on Tuesday with the electoral act amendment bill tipped to be the cause of the meeting.
