Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 General Election.
Obi reportedly emerged as the candidate following the party’s closure of its sales of nomination forms for the presidential ticket.
Sources within the party disclosed that Obi was the only aspirant to purchase the form before the closure.
This placed him at a vantage position to become the NDC’s flagbearer without any opposition.
Meanwhile, the NDC extended by one week the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly seats.
According to the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the deadline for other elective positions forms earlier fixed for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, had been extended to 12 midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Enekweizu, in a statement issued on Monday, said the extension applied only to aspirants seeking tickets into the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship positions.
‘The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) hereby informs all aspirants and the general public that the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and Governorship positions, earlier scheduled to close at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, 17th May, 2026, has been extended to 12:00 midnight on Sunday, 24th May, 2026.
“Screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed the Expression of Interest Forms will commence on Tuesday, 19th May, 2026, and will end at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026.
“The collection and return of Nomination Forms for all screened and cleared aspirants will commence on Wednesday, 20th May, 2026, and close on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026.” He wrote.
While confirming the closure of sales for the nomination forms for presidential position, the NDC National Secretary warned that no further extension of form sales for other positions would be granted beyond the new deadline and urged aspirants to strictly comply with the guidelines and timelines.
“All aspirants are required to ensure strict compliance with the deadline, as no extension will be granted beyond the closing date. However, the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the Office of the President is hereby closed.” He said.
