The Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress on Tuesday summoned what they called an “extraordinary” meeting of their leadership.
The reason for the meeting, NPO Reports learnt was to review modalities for the impending nationwide strike. The two labour bodies are planning a strike over the attacks on the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero in Owerri the Imo state capital last week.
Ajaero, had travelled to Owerri to mobilise workers for a protests against the state government.
Things however turned awry after some hoodlums stormed the venue and descended on the NLC leaders.
Ajaero, who alleged that he was abducted and taken to an unknown destination, said he was beaten mercilessly. He alleged that the attacks were sponsored by the government of Governor Hope Uzodinma. The Governor has since denied any knowledge, saying he does not meddle in labour matters.
