Tragedy struck in Abeokuta the Ogun State Capital on Saturday as a gas tanker exploded in the Ita Oshin area of the metropolis.
Public Relations Officer, Federal Fire Service, Oluwasegun Ayansiji, while confirming the incident said personnel of the service were still on rescue mission and promised to get back to our correspondent.
It was not immediately clear how many people died in the incident but some sources in the area claimed to have seen up to three lifeless bodies which were later removed by emergency and rescue officials.
It was reported that some people had been injured either directly by the gas or while running for their lives.
It was gathered that the tanker carrying gas had lost control and the driver, in his desperation to halt its movement rammed into a road divider creating a massive impact.
The impact had reportedly led to the explosion which caught many unaware in the area.
At least, no fewer than six vehicles were said to have been burnt as the fire which resorted raged on at the scene.
As at the time of filing this report, the state government was yet to make any statement on the tragedy.
The Abeokuta explosion has come 24 hours after that of Eleme petrol tanker explosion which also claimed many lives and properties.
