A group of passengers have been arrested by security officials at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos over alleged possession of cash exceeding $6.1 million.
The passengers, comprising of young men, were nabbed on board an Aero Contractors on Saturday.
According to Premium Times, sources privy to the matter but requested anonymity disclosed that the money was being transported by the passengers suspected to be acting on behalf of a politically exposed person.
They said the suspects were apprehended by officials of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit at the domestic terminal (MMA 1) of the airport.
The suspects have since been handed over to operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further questioning.
“We are still working with the EFCC to unravel the full details,” a senior AVSEC reportedly said.
However, neither the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) nor the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed the development.
The EFCC is also yet to confirm to having the suspects in custody as at the time of filing this report.
