The Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to grant a bail request by Adeniyi Adeyemi, the detained Director-General of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the order on Thursday while ruling on an ex-parte application filed by Adeyemi’s lawyer, M.B. Abdulazeez.
He ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation to give him unhindered access to his lawyers.
The judge held that Adeyemi’s requests for bail, medical attention and other substantive reliefs could not be determined without hearing from the police and other respondents in the suit, in the interest of fair hearing.
Through his lawyer, Adeyemi sought six reliefs, including an order admitting him to bail and directing his release from police custody.
He also asked the court to allow him to obtain medical treatment from healthcare practitioners of his choice over his alleged ill health.
The applicant further sought an order restraining the police and their officers or agents from interrogating him or compelling him to make, adopt or sign any statement except in the presence of a legal practitioner of his choice.
He also asked the court to order that, throughout his detention, he be given unimpeded access to his lawyers at all reasonable times.
In an affidavit filed in support of the application, Adeyemi’s elder brother, Adeniyi Adebola, said the detainee was unable to appear before the commissioner for oaths because he was in detention.
When the matter was called on Thursday, Abdulazeez moved the ex-parte application on behalf of Adeyemi.
Justice Egwuatu declined to grant the substantive reliefs without hearing from the respondents but granted the request relating to access to legal representation.
The judge gave the respondents 72 hours to show cause why the other reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.
The court fixed September 9 for the respondents to show cause.
Adeyemi’s application followed his arrest by the police after Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court issued a warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear for scheduled proceedings in a separate criminal case.
The police are prosecuting Adeyemi in charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/562/2025 over allegations including forgery and impersonation.
Justice Umar had issued the arrest warrant in July and subsequently fixed September 30 for Adeyemi’s arraignment.
Following his arrest, Adeyemi was taken into police custody pending his arraignment.
In the criminal case, the police listed Adeyemi, “Femi Surname Unknown” and “Anu Surname Unknown” as the first to third defendants.
The prosecution has listed several witnesses, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and officials from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
Investigators allege that Adeyemi operated the purported organisation from the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja before his arrest.
