President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Super Falcons over their victory at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nation (WAFCON).
The Nigerian women’s national team had on Saturday night secured their 10th WAFCON title with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against the host nation, Morocco.
Having sealed their spot in the final with a 2-0 defeat of South Africa in the semis, the Super Falcons were billed to face the Atlas Lioness at the Olympic Stadium, Rabat.
A poor start saw Nigeria stumbled before the host nation who grabbed two early goals before the end of first half.
The Super Falcons woke up from their slumber in the second half as their desperate search for goal forced Morocco to concede a penalty which was well converted by Esther Okoronkwo to revive Nigeria’s hope.
Okoronkwo would again set up an assist for Folashade Ijamilusi who pulled the leveler for Nigeria in the 71st.
Super Falcons completed the dramatic comeback courtesy Jennifer Echegini who latched home a free kick from Okoronkwo to seal Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title.
Reacting shortly after the game, Tinubu in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, congratulated the Super Falcons.
In what he described as a spectacular performance, the President as quoted by Onanuga, maintained that the Super Falcons win against the host nation serves as a testament of the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.
He lauded the team’s hardwork, tenacity, and dedication while disclosing that Nigerians look forward to welcoming them.
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.”
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.” Tinubu said.
