The United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman following the retirement of Tony Elumelu from the position.
Nnorom officially assumed office on August 21, 2026, after Elumelu completed the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines.
UBA announced Nnorom’s arrival as chairman in a social media post on Wednesday.
He was described as a seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with more than 40 years of experience.
“We welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc,” the bank said.
According to UBA, Nnorom has spent more than eight years in senior leadership roles within the group and has a deep understanding of its operations and expansion across Africa.
Prior to his position as Chairman, he served as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer. He also served as a Non-Executive Director on the UBA board.
UBA said Nnorom’s experience would be valuable as the financial institution continues to expand its operations across Africa and other international markets.
“With his wealth of experience and understanding of UBA’s journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Group’s continued growth across Africa and beyond,” the bank stated.
Nnorom joined the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024 after holding several executive positions within the group.
His previous roles at UBA include Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk) and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.
As CEO of UBA Africa, he oversaw the bank’s operations across several African countries and played a role in its pan-African expansion.
Nnorom has also held senior leadership positions outside UBA as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc from September 2014 to May 2017 and has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.
His banking experience includes senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, now UBA, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.
Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
