Veteran Yoruba poet, Alabi Ogundepo, has died at the age of 84.
Ogundepo reportedly passed away on Monday.
The demise of the renowned Saki-born poet, writer and cultural enthusiast, was announced in a statement signed by Dupe Ogundepo Falana on behalf of the family.
Ogundepo was described by his family as a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of his people.
“Through his creative works and public engagements, he contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of his people,” the statement said.
The family further described him as a man of dignity, wisdom, and compassion, stressing that his presence commanded respect.
“Beyond his literary accomplishments, Chief Alabi Ogundepo was a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion.
“He touched the lives of many through his counsel, friendship, intellectual contributions and commitment to the development of his community.
“His presence commanded respect, while his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage.” The statement read further.
Funeral arraignment of the late poet will, according to the family, be communicated later.
