An All Progressives Congress (APC) Diaspora Chieftain, Mr Ayoola Lawal, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to clearly explain the intent behind his repeated use of the term “Rainbow Coalition”.
According to Lawal, the language, given its global association with LGBTQ+ identity, can be misinterpreted in the Nigerian socio-cultural context.
Lawal, a former Secretary of the Forum of APC Diaspora Chairmen, said this in a statement on Thursday.
The call followed Wike’s declaration that his Rainbow Coalition would dominate the political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
While acknowledging the legitimacy of coalition-building in democratic politics, Lawal stressed that political language must be culturally sensitive, precise, and unambiguous in a society guided by conservative social and legal norms.
“In Nigeria, where the law, culture, and public sentiment do not support LGBTQ ideology, political leaders must be deliberate and clear in their communication.
“Symbols with established global meanings, if introduced without explanation, inevitably raise questions.”
He urged Wike to clarify publicly that the term is strictly political, with no ideological, cultural, or social agenda beyond electoral collaboration.
Lawal noted that ambiguous messaging risked distracting Nigerians from urgent national priorities, including economic recovery, security, and institutional reform.
He, however, urged Nigerians to support the President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the administration as one committed to laying a strong structural foundation for national development.
“President Tinubu is taking difficult but necessary decisions to reposition Nigeria.
“These reforms are foundational, not cosmetic, and require patience, unity, and sustained support,” he said, adding that the President deserves the opportunity of a second term to consolidate ongoing reforms.”
Lawal emphasised that responsible leadership and clear communication were essential as the country moves toward the 2027 elections.
“Nigeria cannot afford policy reversals at this critical stage.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about rebuilding institutions, strengthening the economy, and securing a better future for generations to come,” he said.
He urged political leaders nationwide to place national interest above personal ambition and ensure that political rhetoric does not create unnecessary controversy or misinterpretation. NAN
