Amnesty International has demanded the release of Enugu couple who were abducted over their alleged membership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This was contained in a statement via the organization’s X handle.
The couple identified as Sunday Ifedi and Calista Ifedi were abducted by Nigerian security agents on the 23rd of November, 2021.
According to Amnesty, the duo have been detained without access to their families or lawyers.
“Amnesty International urges the Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release from unlawful detention: Sunday Ifedi and his wife Calista Ifedi.
“This brazen disregard for national, regional and international human rights obligations must end
“The couple were abducted by #Nigerian security agents from their home in #Enugu on 23 November 2021, over alleged membership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Sunday and Calista Ifedi have been detained incommunicado — without access to family or lawyers.”
Amnesty further noted that since 2016, it has documented hundreds of cases of unlawful detention in the southeast, as well as many cases of disappearance of persons after arrest by security forces.
“This is an assault on the rule of law.” The statement read.
