The Vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his 2027 presidential ambition and support the party’s ticket.
Kwankwaso made the call on Thursday while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja.
The former Kano State governor appealed to Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to step down from the 2027 race, promising that he would be well taken care of if the NDC wins the election.
Kwankwaso said Atiku should focus on his traditional title as Wazirin Adamawa.
“Go to the Wazirin of Adamawa’s house and tell him in Fulani that he needs to focus on his traditional title of Wazirin, given his age and health.
“If Allah grants us success, we will take good care of him, especially since you all come from Adamawa. An apology should be offered to him.
“Step down for us; if we win, we will take care of you,” Kwankwaso said.
Atiku remains one of the major opposition figures seeking to contest the presidency in 2027.
Kwankwaso and Labour Party’s Peter Obi had previously been associated with the ADC-led opposition coalition before moving to the NDC in May.
NPO reports that Atiku has sought the Nigerian presidency on four previous occasions, contesting in 2007, 2011, 2019 and 2023, but was unsuccessful in each election.
