Russia’s defence ministry has given its first figures for casualties sustained during its invasion of Ukraine. It says 498 Russian soldiers have been killed and 1,597 wounded so far, according to Russian media reports. The claim is significantly less than Ukraine’s assessment of Russian casualties – Kyiv claims it has killed 5,840 Russian troops. Kyiv has not given figures for the number of Ukrainian military killed and injured. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine took a heavy toll on civilians on Wednesday as residential neighbourhoods were bombed and key cities surrounded. The Russian military claimed it was in control of Kherson, a strategically important port city near Crimea. However, local authorities said Kherson was still under Ukrainian control, despite being surrounded. Japan is closing its embassy in Kiev until further notice amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said on Wednesday that it would operate a liaison office in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv near the border with Poland.
