The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man accused of threatening his late son’s widow and allegedly locking her and her children out of their family home in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying it was alerted on reports of attempt by members of the deceased’s family to dispossess the widow, simply identified as Tosin of her home and property.
Similarly, an instagram post by Human Rights Activist, Harrison Gwamnishu showed a video of the widow’s father-in-law, using a padlock to block access to the house.
According to the DSVA, the widow alleged that she had been subjected to death threats, physical assault and intimidation after the recent death of her husband.
The widow also informed the agency that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division.
“The Agency successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation following the recent death of her husband.
“She further informed the Agency that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division.
“Preliminary feedback from the Police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue,” the statement read.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of the widow and her children, adding that it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
The government also commended members of the public and partner organisations whose vigilance and prompt reporting contributed to the state’s response to the case.
