Goods worth several millions of Naira have been destroyed following a fire outbreak at the popular ‘Mechanic Village’ in Uyo.
A News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) survey on Monday showed that the fire occurred at about 10.00p.m on Saturday.
Some of the victims who spoke to NAN said that the inferno affected no fewer than 12 shops at the mechanic village.
One of them, Mr Godswill Anisua, 28, said that his late parents bequeathed the spare parts shop to him.
“My father died three years ago, and my mother died in February 2025. I have been managing this shop to take care of myself and my siblings.
“I lost good goods valued more than N40 million in the fire outbreak.
” I don’t know where and how to start again. I restocked the shop just a few days ago. I have no money left,” he said.
Another victim, Mr Christopher Agbo, a father of four, said that two of his shops were completely razed in the inferno.
“I lost goods valued more N100 million. I took loans to restock the shops, I have a family to take care of, I wonder where to begin from,” he said.
Mr Fabian Okpo, the immediate past Vice Chairman of the traders union, described the situation as ‘unfortunate and worrisome’
Okpo, said that the 12 affected shops contained goods worth several millions of Naira.
“Some of the shops were just recently restocked. This is a sad loss. It can send a trader back home.
“We urge the government, good spirited individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the victims.
“They have dependants, they need to begin again, they need to be supported,” he said.
NAN gathered that the fire outbreak was caused by a spark from electrical connection in one of the shops. NAN
